WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Since its first record on European coasts of the Strait of Gibraltar in 2015, the invasive seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae (Dictyotales, Ochrophyta) in less than ten years, has rapidly widespread along European continental coasts (Spain, France, Portugal and Italy), Macaronesia and Moroccan coasts of both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with predictive distribution models announcing a wider area of species favorability worldwide. This new invader homogenizes sea bottoms, drastically reducing biodiversity, and producing important economic impacts on fisheries and for local governments, derived from the huge amounts of biomass drifting in the sea and on the beaches. The presence of the species in several European countries together with Northern Africa, becomes R. okamurae in a common threat to Mediterranean and Atlantic native biodiversity, which demands joint efforts for an efficient management to minimize its ecological and economic impacts and expansion, and preventing the arrival of the species to new areas. After nearly ten years since its first identification, several research projects have produced a body of knowledge focused on two main topics: the general biology and ecology of the species and its potential uses. But up to now, no attempt has been done in order to join these efforts with the managing of the species.
Managers of both invaded and sensitive areas for the invasion, express their concern on the managing options of the species in the present regulation scenario, where any commercial usage of the biomass is forbidden, and prevention actions of the species dispersal are not so much demanded and understood as mitigation actions in impacted areas and sectors.
In this context the main objective of the workshop is to be the first call for international cooperation and scientific information exchange of researchers, managers, and stakeholders for a better management of R. okamurae in the invaded and favorable areas at local, regional, national and international levels.

The workshop will bring together 15 speakers and a maximum of 35 participants. The scientific programme will start on Monday 7th April in the morning and will end on Thursday 10th April a field trip. Ample time for informal discussion will be reserved. Participants will be invited to present a poster. Some abstracts will be selected for a short presentation.
The workshop will bring together scientists, managers and stakeholders on the invasive seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae.
The workshop will be organized in four different sessions focused on the biology, uses and management of R. okamurae, in which research results and management experiences will be presented, as well as discussion forums in the form of round tables. A field trip (Thursday 10th) to visit invaded areas in southern Spain is included in the workshop for speakers and participants. Simultaneous translation services will be provided for attendees.
Up to 35 additional participants are encouraged to present their results in form of Poster or selected short oral presentations, or just attend the different sessions.
VENUE OF THE WORKSHOP:
The workshop will be held at Sede Tecnológica de Málaga of the International University of Andalucía (UNIA), located at the city center of the brilliant city of Málaga, in Costa del Sol (Southern Spain), in the touristic harbour of Málaga. The venue facilitates the social interaction and informal discussions during the days of the workshop.
Accommodation for the speakers will be at Casa Diocesana de Málaga, a beautiful historic building located close to the city center but in a quiet place, which also offers rooms for participants at an excellent quality-price ratio.
